Digital twins are digital replicas of assets or activities using modeling and sensors to create digital representations. Digital twins are not new; engineering teams in various industries have used 3D renderings of computer-aided design models, asset models, and process simulations for years. However, faster wireless networks and the resulting availability of real-time data enable much more detailed and dynamic digital representations. When sensors collect data from a connected device, the sensor data can be used to continuously update the digital twin. The digital twin becomes a real-time accurate copy of a physical object's properties and states. For instance, digital twins of physical assets such as power-generation turbines, jet engines, and train engines are becoming common when the assets are very valuable and when downtime would be very costly.
